The Story Behind Comfort, Relax, and Focus

When we started Ash & Cedar Co., we didn't set out to make a dozen different scents. We set out to make candles that inspired different states of mind. Scents we'd actually want burning in our own home — one for winding down, one for settling in, and one for getting things done. That's how Comfort, Relax, and Focus came to be.
Comfort: Amber Vanilla & Cashmere Musk
Comfort was the first scent we landed on, and it's still the one that feels most like home. Amber vanilla and cashmere musk make for a warm, grounding scent — the kind you want burning on a slow Sunday or during the first cold week of fall. It's less "sweet dessert candle" and more "feel at home" which is exactly what we were going for.
Relax: Palo Santo & Chamomile
Relax came out of a very specific need: something to burn in the evening that actually helped us wind down instead of just smelling nice. Palo Santo brings a smoky, grounding note, while chamomile softens it into something calming without tipping into "spa cliché." It's become the candle we reach for most on weeknights.
Focus: Bergamot & Cedarwood Blanc
Focus was built for the desk, not the living room. Bergamot gives it a crisp, citrus lift, while cedarwood blanc keeps it from feeling too sharp or energizing in a jittery way. It's meant to clear a room without overwhelming it — good for home offices, studios, or anywhere you need your head in the game.
Why Only Three
It would have been easy to launch ten scents on day one. We chose three on purpose. Every candle we sell is hand-poured in small batches here in Idaho, using a coconut-soy wax blend we tested extensively for clean, even burning. Keeping the line small let us actually perfect each one instead of spreading ourselves thin — and it means when you pick up a Comfort, Relax, or Focus candle, you're getting a scent we've genuinely lived with, not just launched.
As we grow, that same philosophy is guiding what comes next. We continue to test different scents to help inspire states of mind and to welcome in different seasons of the year.
