Fragrance Oils vs. Essential Oils: What’s the Difference?

If you’ve ever compared candle labels, you’ve probably noticed some brands list “fragrance oil” while others say “essential oil.” They sound similar, but they come from completely different places — and that difference matters more than most people realize.

Where the Scent Actually Comes From

Essential oils are extracted directly from plants — through steam distillation, cold pressing, or similar natural processes. When you smell Palo Santo or Bergamot in one of our candles, you’re smelling compounds that came from an actual tree, fruit, or resin. Nothing synthetic added, nothing recreated in a lab.

Fragrance oils, on the other hand, are synthetic. They’re formulated in a lab to mimic a scent — sometimes a real one like “vanilla,” sometimes something that doesn’t exist in nature at all, like “clean linen” or “birthday cake.” They’re often more affordable and more consistent from batch to batch, which is why most mass-market candles use them.

Why We Blend Both

Here’s where it gets more nuanced than “one or the other.” At Ash & Cedar Co., we use fragrance oils that are built on essential oil bases and formulated specifically for candle use. In practice, that means every scent starts with real essential oils, then is rounded out with a candle-safe fragrance oil designed to work alongside them.

We do this for one main reason: consistency. Pure essential oils vary batch to batch, the same way wine or coffee does — which is part of their charm, but it also means a candle poured in January might smell subtly different from one poured in June. Blending in a fragrance oil built on those same essential oil notes lets us keep RELAX smelling like RELAX, every single pour, without losing the natural character the essential oils bring to the scent.

It also means the fragrance oils we use aren’t the same as what you’d find in a typical mass-market candle. They’re formulated for candle use specifically, on an essential oil foundation — not synthetic scent stacked on synthetic scent.
